Anti virus is not a firewall. It could protect you from viruses, but not hackers. XPSP2 has a built in firewall that should be enabled, but I think it is better to go with Zone Alarm which you can get for free at http://www.zonelabs.com

You do not need multiple antivirus software running; this would greatly slow your system down and they may not opperate properly with a second antivirus program running.
Yes definitely there is need to install internet security programs because antivirus will not block unauthorized access to your system from net nor it will block untrusted programs to access the internet, antivirus will only detect the virus files. so you must install a firewall (norton firewall recommended) and a antispyware program (Ad-aware) to make your system secure.
The best for internet security is still ZoneAlarm.
