Has anyone heard of computer viruses now being downloaded to cell phones via text messages?

I heard when you receive a text message you can now receive viruses on your cell phone, and now we will need anti-virus protection for our cell phones as well. Fact or Fiction?

There are several different issues here - some true, some false.

First of all, viruses cannot spread via *text* messages (i.e., SMS) - so, if this is indeed what you have heard, it's fiction.

However, viruses *can* spread via multimedia (MMS) messages. In fact, several such viruses already exist - the CommWarrior family being the most widespread one but there are also others (e.g., Mabir).

As a consequence of the above, you *do* need anti-virus protection for some cell phones.

It is important to note, however, that not all cell phones are vulnerable to viruses. Basically, only the phones using the Symbian S60 v8.x operating system are seriously threatened. (Although proof-of-concept viruses also exist for phones running the PalmOS, Windows Mobile and Symbian UIQ operating systems, they have no chances of surviving in the wild.)

fiction, not true, i dont believe u can get a virus on your phone through a pc..
The people posting that a virus by cell phone is fiction or cannot happen are idiots. Viruses DO exist for cell phones. The likelyhood of becoming infected is rather low but CAN happen!!!! The first virus was called CABIR.A and started in the Philippines. (Read here: http://www.wirelessguide.org/cell-phone-...
