Best Overall Anti-Virus?

I want an full protection. The best there is out there. I have currently tried avg internet suite which messed up my computer. The actuall program messed up the login process of my windows. I am on winxp and whiched to the windows 2000 classic login. It didn't work at all. It would always freeze before it even got to the ''windows is loading'' screen and show a black screen or it would go there and freeze showing that screen for a while. On several other random times I'd get to the account login screen and it would lock up there too. As well it wouldn't show a black or loading screen but it would show the blue basic background and not load anything. Back to the question. I am a gamer who needs full protection without the resource hogs. Avg worked perfectly untill the glitches, can anyone suggest a fix or a better/equal protection setup?

you should use ''windows live one care'' as it is from microsoft's site it has all the pc utilities built in it as virus, spyware scan, defragmentation, disk clean up,repair resisty errors, back up windows critical files ans live update to all updates of windows critical issues

it's also 90days trial

Which anti-virus+anti-spyware uses the least of windows resources with the most effective detection and...?auto protect

You should try eScan Internet Security Suite from MicroWorld as it uses the least resources. It uses a technology called MWL developed by them that scans the files before they are saved on your computer. Therefore when you open the file in any application it does not use any resources as the file has already being scanned. I am very satisfied with this product and use it both on my laptop and desktop at home.
AVG and Avast are the best know free virus programs.

Sometimes you can get Norton for free with their rebates, but I'm not a Norton fan.

Norton anti virus?

I keep having a Pop-up telling me that my protection is running out. I have paid out, using my flexi-friend, for the best protection that they offer (three days ago). However I keep having the same Pop-up, can any one solve my dilema, as it is becoming a nuisance as I don't know if I will still be protected. Yes, I have had confirmation of my subscription.

once it's totally expired then it won't protect your computer anymore like mines, mines been expired since december and i still haven't changed it and it's keep telling me to renew or reactivate it and i'm lazy to pay so i didnt, but it's best for you to just add some money into it to get the newest antivirus

Contact Norton directly on their website. Or save yourself the trouble and money and go for Mcafee instead. Its better as it is. ;)

i have tried more than 30 different antiviruses by now and there is some or the other fault in each of them i used nod32 , which is fast but doesnt give full protection , norton gives full protction but not fast enough , f-secure - is fast and gives full protectkion but is not compatible with my zone alarm firewall , and mcafee - i dont know they are may be searching for viruses in mars - it does not detect viruses , not safe enough. any recomendations wuld be appreciated . thank you

    AVG virus i highly recommend,coz

    1. it's free

    2. easy to update

    3. can scan better than many other anti-virus

    4. smallest cpu consumption taken

    5. compitable with many other security such as firewall, pop-up blocker, registry cleaner.

    hope this helps.
I say Norton is the best. The protect they provide is unmatched, its costly but deserves it. Also the support and updates that you get when you go for Norton are unmatched. I'd say go for it.

    Thanks

The one i'm using is Avast :) go to download.com and type avast... check out its rating .. by far it is teh best AV software ive used uptil now.. ive been using it for 2.5 years now .. andnorton is a source hog ....
啶傕啶侻cAfee Total Security is good one i am using McAfee for long time they are providing good solution for virus , spy ware , spam . i don't have the headache of security issue u just have to make inshore that it is updated from net
First off that Zone Alarm firewall is probably the best software firewall out there. Kudos! I would say that all you need is a free anti-virus program. AVG free version is great. It stopped a nasty drive-by download on my pc last year and the 7.5 version is just out.

If your modem/router is firewalled that is another great asset to your online security. Check the link below.
Well I love AVG Antivirus. It is free for personal use and is very good at detecting viruses, even in Internet Explorer temporary files. You can try it out at http://grisoft.com/doc/downloads-product...

Anti Virus, Spyware guard, and firewall question?

I have norton antivirus 2007, Zone Alarm basic, and spyware doctor. I normally run both norton and zone alarm together. would it be okay to also run spyware doctor with the on-guard protection? Or is that too much?

It's fine to run all of those things but each one will slow down your computer and like drugs their combined effect may really make your machine run slowly. Personally I just run AVG for antivirus/firewall and that's all I need, but then again I'm more wary of viruses and spyware than the average joe.
get mcafee it does it all at once

Anti Virus Programs for a Mac... how to keep my Mac secure?

    Hello,

I have heard all this talk about how I don't need antivirus or malware protection programs for my new Mac, but I'd like to be careful. Can anyone tell me where I can download some good, free antivirus and malware scanner programs for a Mac? Any suggestions on what progs to use?

Also, any other tips on how to keep my mac secure would be appreciated. Thank you!

I don't know anyone who uses an anti-virus for a Mac. I don't, and I've got four Macs at home.

In your mail preferences%26gt;viewing un-check the box that says ''Display Remote Images in HTML messages.'' That will help against steganography (hiding a virus in a pic).

In System Preferences, un-check everything in your ''Sharing'' tab. Turn on your built-in firewall. Turn off internet sharing.

Also set a password for yourself as the System Administrator.

    You don't need anything else.

Here's my solution to the Antivirus and Spy Ware problems.

I have: AVG Antivirus 7.5 Free edition %26 Spy Sweeper

Those two programs run all the time my pc is on.

I also have: Spybot Search %26 Destroy (FREE); AdAware SE Pro (FREE)

I run these two programs at least once a week or if I've done a lot of surfing. The only thing I don't like about Spybot and AdAware is that you have to launch them manually. It would be nice if they ran all the time.

For Fire Walls: I use the one built into my DSL Modem %26 my Linksys Router; and then I have the Microsoft Firewall turned on also.

  • My Norton anti virus product key won't work anymore?

I uninstalled norton 2007 in order to upgrade to vista. So when I go to try to reinstall it says it has to have XP in order to install and it aborts. I went to the symantec.com/vistaupdate website to get the upgrade. It won't allow me to use the product key as stated in my cd case. It says its been flagged although I have done nothing wrong (not shared it).

The computer is only 8 months old and I should have 4 more months of protection before I have to buy more. I can't believe the only option norton gives you is to SEND IN YOUR CD case and wait a month for them to resolve it. Thats BS. I have no protection in the mean time.

    What can I do?

My Norton anti virus product key won't work anymore?antivirus software

Honestly. I would consider it a good thing that you can't install Norton back on the machine. In my honest opinion, Norton is a horrid program anymore. Its footprint is HUGE, and its leaks memory like a siv!

There are a few other products out there that are just as good for protection (if not better) and you don't notice they are running like you do with Norton.

I would recommend looking up AVG, and Trend Micro. They are both great products that I recommend to anyone asking about Antivirus / Internet Security. They both have a free trial you can download last I checked. So, even if you are set on getting Norton back, You could download one of their free trials, then the other while you wait. I think each is a month long.

I have been running Avast Home edition (free) on 2 desktops and laptop all running at about 1.5 and 500 MB -1 gig ram for the last 2 years along with Zone Alarm Personal Firewall (free). No conflicts, no viruses, no hacks, no overly horrible lag.

Norton cost me almost $100 then let in viruses that cost me weeks of re-installs, re-formatting and poor customer service.

When I phone a # that says English/Canada, I expect the person to speak English.

Avast has a lot of options for personal choices on what is running and what is not. It is simple enough for most users to configure. It has caught the website/pop up nasties numerous times and monitors your temp files.

I tried Avg and have a few friends that like it (They still get nailed) but I did not like the interface, options or accuracy.

Plus, Avast has a cool voice info/pop up that kicks the little You've Got Mail guys butt.

I have Norton Anti Virus..Would it be harmful to use other programs at same time or even possible??aurora

Norton Anti-Virus has actually been known in some cases to spread viruses to your computer, and it usually doesn't block existing ones very well while limiting other functions. Overall, pretty worthless. I'd suggest you completely get rid of Norton and start using Spybot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index... There was another program alongside that I used to use when I had Windows (no virus' for me now on a Mac!) but it slipped my mind. Regardless, I never had viruses by using this program and the other.

I have Norton Anti Virus..Would it be harmful to use other programs at same time or even possible??download

It would do more harm than help..only 1 antivirus should be on a computer.
Norton antivirus does slow the performance, with another antivirus it is better to let the viruses into your pc. but solo antivirus is very small less than 3 mega and is pretty good as well you may try a trail versiont with norton
Never use more then 1 Anti Virus program. Using more then one Anti Virus program causes conflict and gives you false positives.

As an independent IT Technician I am constantly asked about Anti-virus software and which one's the best. My answer is always the same: none of them so go with any that's free. No one in the industry can give you any supported data as to who is the best. They all claim to be but cannot support the argument with clear evidence to back up their claim. Probably because they'd get sued and people tend to believe what they want to believe. Norton and Mcafee are the big boys but isn't that because they are in with the big suppliers to get their product pre-installed on these pc's.

Remember you heard it here first. Now I'll probably get sued.

Anti virus is not a firewall. It could protect you from viruses, but not hackers. XPSP2 has a built in firewall that should be enabled, but I think it is better to go with Zone Alarm which you can get for free at http://www.zonelabs.com

If norton anti virus is installed on home pc ,is thare any need to have another internet security software?firewall

I find that AVAST is really, really, good. Try it out, I think you will not be disappointed. Avast.com Report It

yes, it will add a firewall, so you have better protection against intruders.
It is wise to have a firewall and spyware protection, such as AdAware or Spybot Search and Destoroy (or both) which are both free. You do not need multiple antivirus software running; this would greatly slow your system down and they may not opperate properly with a second antivirus program running.
Yes definitely there is need to install internet security programs because antivirus will not block unauthorized access to your system from net nor it will block untrusted programs to access the internet, antivirus will only detect the virus files. so you must install a firewall (norton firewall recommended) and a antispyware program (Ad-aware) to make your system secure.
The best for internet security is still ZoneAlarm.

    Info on Anti-virus?cafe racer

I think they say you shouldn't use two antivirus programs in case of conflict. I have always used two antivirus programs. For a year I had CA and AVG and there was no conflict - it's all in how you set them up when installing the programs. But I didn't like CA and at the end of the year I didn't renew it, but changed to Avast. So I now have both AVG %26 Avast installed and use both and have been for almost two years - Avast provides real-time protection which the free version of AVG does not. There were only two potential areas of conflict that I could see involving these programs - having both programs scan your primary mail and automatic updating. To avoid any conflict, when I installed Avast I did not use the feature to scan my primary (default) mail program (which happens to be Outlook Express) - since I thought there could be a conflict if both programs were set to scan my mail program, so in setting up Avast I didn't use that feature (that was the only feature I did not use) and kept AVG as my primary mail scanner and prefer it over Avast in this area. As mentioned above, the only other conflict I could imagine was automatic updates - so when I finished installing Avast, I set it up so I could do the updates manually every day. I love both programs - they have different features - both are great programs and provide great protection. Also, I am confident, after using both of these programs for two years and having no problems or conflicts that these two programs can be used together. I also installed both AVG %26 Avast on a friend's computer a year ago - did the exact same set up - and again, no problems, no conflicts. These two programs do different things, and because of that was able to save their computer when it became badly infected. Avast actually found several ''decompression bombs'' on the computer that could have have destroyed their hard drive and AVG was able to heal all of the system files infected.

You can try downloading at tucows.com or download.com. Some of their freeware stuff is pretty good. As far as name brands, more than likely downloading for free would be illegal unless you are using a free trial from the manufacturer's website.

if u want a gud anti-virus software i recommend NOD32. I hav been using it for some time now (after having used Norton) and one thing u notice is tht it doesn't slow down ur PC at all. It has detected plenty of viruses which Nortan cudn't. overall - the best virus guard out there.

You need to run an anti-adware and/or anti-spyware scan. Maybe you have this as part of your Norton suite. If not, you can get free scanners at http://free.grisoft.com/ .

Also, it might be a good idea to use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Firefox blocks pop-ups by default with an in-built pop-up blocker. http://www.getfirefox.com/ .
If you have run the appropriate scans and nothing is detected, I can only assume that these adds are internet popups. (I admit this is a bit of an assumption, given how much Norton sucks... Wont say anything about Yahoo....) If such is the case, simply understand that these advertisements are no more factual than those worshiping your ''unique banner id'' or offering free x boxes. That being said, you should get a popup blocker.

Yes, I had this same problem. I updated to the Norton, and I DESPISE it! My computer has slowed down considerably, and when I open Internet Explorer, it often takes a long time, or gets hung up and quits responding. I am ready to trash the Norton. Does anyone know how to get the Computer Associates virus program back? Oh, I also cannot get my computer to restore to a pre Norton version. This really stinks! Any suggestions?

    General question about anti-virus software!?

which one is over all effective both for security and protection, Mcafee or Norton?..

just that simple!.. thanks in advance..

General question about anti-virus software!?computer virus

McAfee and Norton are today's MOST powerful Internet defense, but McAfee wins.

1 McAfee does not slow down your system

2 Norton slows down your system

3 McAfee has been protecting me for 6 years and I haven't caught a virus with it.

4 Norton protected me for 1 year, and I caught virsues with it, but it was able to delete the virsues, though.

Norton is VERY good, but I rather McAfee, especially since my system hasn't crashed nor gotten a virus with it.

Plus, McAfee does not slow down your computer, which is why I give it a good 10 out of 10 rating.

General question about anti-virus software!?free spyware remover

I'm sorry, but Norton is awful. There is no way you can call it ''VERY good''. When Norton finds viruses, half the time it doesn't know what to do or can't even remove them. It just says ''Remove manually'' and when you go look, you can't find the file! It's truly awful. Avoid Norton at all costs. Report It

Neither! They're both awful anti virus packages. Get Trend Micro PC-Cillin. Easily the best anti virus/firewall available.

Other than Norton anti-virus and McAfee what are some good reliable ones out there?

I was told Norton was to much of a hog in my computer to run and I'm using Web root, but I just don't think it's giving me the protection. What are some good ones that wont cost an arm and a leg to get? Thanks

Other than Norton anti-virus and McAfee what are some good reliable ones out there?computer

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the following linkhttp://www.computeractive.co.uk/. On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps

Other than Norton anti-virus and McAfee what are some good reliable ones out there?free spyware

trend micro is one of the best right up there with norton but trend micr is cheaper and doesnt bogg down your cpu as much. you can buy this software at any retail store for about 19.99 that includes a year subscription of support and updates. enjoy
I use webroot and It has done a better job than Mcaffee and Norton
Kaspersky works really well. It cost about $ 50. If you have a compusa go there they have very good rebates on there products. I paid only $10 for mines.
AVG is excellent. It may be free (there is a professional edition) but it is very good. AVG anti-spyware is also a good program
I have used Norton, McAfee and several others. The one I settled on is The Shield Antivirus and Firewall. Small memory usage and catches almost everything.
Get some of these programs listed below. All these software work very well, they are the leaders in the current market.

The new Norton is so cumbersome it slows computers down so they barely work. We bought and installed it, had to remove it. Don't recommend Norton any longer; it was great in the past but no longer.
There is no ''contract''. If you are being given the option for 2 years of something it would be for 2 years of definition updates.. which are more important than installing the program in the first place.

Norton 360 or McAfee Total Protection are both reliable vendor suites that include protection against all types of malware (antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc) and if they are kept properly configured and completely up to date.. then they are almost foolproof.

You can surely get yourself a freeware program but you will not be served well by it especially if you have little understanding of how these programs work.

    Good Luck
Windows defender, its free, as well AVG free edition. I've never had a problem while using these. Google it and you will find the downloads for it. Use the two together.

mcAfee is da best you can get. but norton is da second best tho...
I currently use Norton and I don't think there is any better Anti-Virus. Norton has never let any viruses in my computer, but it probably does make your computer run a little slower. The free versions of AVG Anti-Virus and Avast Anti-Virus are good anti-viruses. I know a lot of people that use them and highly recommend them.

I suggest you get both these.

McAfee is a good solution. But why don't you switch over to a new version of Norton. The new ones are safer and speedier than ever.
    laptop/desktop, makes no difference.

stick with Ad-aware and Spybot- run them every day.
Norton really messes things up. I use the FREE version of AVAST http://www.avast.com

yes, turn it off by right clicking on bottom tool bar.

    yes it has.

just go to avg control center and click on resident shield %26gt;properties there you can turn it off..

however it's recommended that you leave it on.
yes, and you can turn it off.
well quite to say it has, more if you have a avg pro, it should work well..
most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.

i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

download firefox for free, Just have a try:

AVG, is it Anti Virus Gateway. If so then it doesn't have scanning capabilities (realtime Protection) for its operating system. It only can scan the traffic that is passing through this very effectivily. Exampls: Trendmicro (IMSS, IWSS or Symantec Gateway security)
yes AVG has real-time protection. open control center and go to resident shield and open it properties and uncheck turn on AVG resident shield protection.

    Thanks in advance

Is there any problem in using 2 Anti-virus softwares?free antivirus

Yes! Running Two antivirus software means... letting Trojans to enter.. your computer they'll start scanning same time slows down and takes registry space... conflict each other... and create Huge Problems

however it's strongly recommended to install two anti-spywares or Firewalls if you don't want to get infected....

Use avast..... it's schedule time boot scanning is Best Feature.... if compared to any other anti-viruses... features and it won't slow down... your computer...

I don't mean Avg is bad.. or won't provide defense.. but those two features lacks in Avg or everythin is =

Is there any problem in using 2 Anti-virus softwares?internet

yes for AV software keep only one active.
Yes, very Yes! Two AV (AntiVirus) can make your OS hang! And will make your system work to slowly (very slowly) or never to run in the desktop! And then, can make other AntiVirus can't work properly.

Why did my Zone Alarm Anti Virus suddenly disappear from my computer?

Lately our router or something like it was acting up pretty bad so we had to do without it with our only protection from things on the net being Zone Alarm. But just a matter of minutes ago I opened up the window, checked what was going on in general with it, and then it said ''not responding'' at the top. I tried exiting out of it and the window wouldn't close, then when it finally closed it disappeared from those small icons at the bottom right hand of my screen right next to the time. So what happened?? I know Answers is safe to use because it never said that any access attempts had been blocked while I was on here but when I wasn't on the net there would be several access attempts blocked, even some that were highly rated according to ZA. I tried searching for it on my computer but it came up with NOTHING.

well there are many good anti-virus programs. But i think the program which has the best features is avast home edition. Avast has a script blocker, web scanner, real-time protection and a lot of other features that will keep you computer protected.

The home edition is just the same as the professional edition, which you have to pay for...

So i really recommend you to download avast home edition. You will have your computer protected.

I suppose thats all you want freeeeeeeeeee..
You have a Windows system, I guess? Not a Mac? You really need protection from other types of malware too, not just viruses--spyware for example. And protection from ''data miners,'' little programs that work in the Net like it's an actual mine in the earth, looking for information, or data, about you. You'll find another great way to protect yourself for free if you Google for Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool and run that any time, it's free and very quick. I run it nearly every day. Also Ad-Aware is free and is top-rated by the experts. (Not a program called Adware, no-no-no! Make sure you spell this one right!) The point is, it's not just virus protection that you need, believe me. Another that's free and blazing quick is Yahoo's Anti-Spy. It's so easy to sign up for email at Yahoo if you don't already have Yahoo and this is right there on the Yahoo toolbar. It's another one I run every single time I use the Internet, I mean really several times a day at least. Hope this helps! You know, don't you, that all these other annoyances and dangers are called ''malware''? You need protection from all of them, take my word for it. You might also want to be sure your system's firewall is turned on. And empty your recycle bin or trash or whatever it's called on your computer too after you delete these awful little bits of malware as well, then re-start your computer. (All this may sound complicated, hope not. But it only takes a minute or two really.)

Stop sign red and white anti virus scan on my laptop?hp

OK, the program you're talking about is called 'Stop-Sign', right? This is an anti-malware scanner from eAcceleration. It was listed in the rogue/suspect programs at Spyware Warrior, see here: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti...

It was listed due to the company's history of employing deceptive advertising and drive-by-downloads. However, that has been cleaned up and it's no longer listed as rogue or suspect (but nor is it listed among the Trustworthy Anti-Spyware Products: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti... ).

You *should* only have this on your pc if you chose to download and install it. It should have its own uninstaller, so check where-ever you keep your program files, usually C:/Program Files. If you find a file called StopSign or eAcceleration, check it for an uninstaller. If there is one, run it. That should uninstall it. Otherwise look in Add/Remove programs: Start %26gt; Control Panel %26gt; Add or Remove programs.

    Good luck.

Well done! Bet you're pleased about that. If that was your main anti-virus.anti/spyware program you need to get another p.d.q. I'd go with Avast for AV and AVG for anti-spyware, you won't go far wrong with those. Just give your pc a full scan to make sure there's nothing hiding there. Report It

The only free Internet Security Suite is called Blink PE. but I don't recommend it. If you're considering freeware security applications, you can choose from the following:

firewall: (listed in order of preference)

    Comodo (http://www.comodo.com ), or

    PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall )

Comodo recently released version 3.0 of its firewall, which adds an intrusion prevention component that's very effective, though it does take time for it to learn your system, and requires some ongoing attention by the user to make sure programs don't get improperly blocked. Comodo is one of the strongest firewalls available, freeware or commercial, according to the independent testing site matousec.com.

antivirus: (listed in order of preference)

    Avira (http://www.free-av.com )

    AVAST! Home (http://www.avast.com )

    AVG (http://free.grisoft.com )

all provide realtime protection and automatic updates; all have ICSA and VB100 certification, but Avira has been among the highest rated in tests by several respected US and UK computer publications.

Whats the best up to date anti virus program to install on a slower computer? I use Mcafee on my faster comp.?internet security software

There is not a single software that will guarantee 100% protection. You can use McAfee, Norton and others. But you need to do the following inaddition to having an anti-virus software.

These are best practices to protecting your computer/laptop:

    - Perform monthly updates of Microsoft patches

    - Perform daily updates of your Anti-Virus/Firewall program(s)

    - Perform daily updates to your Anti-Spyware and Adware program(s)

    - Perform a weekly scan of your hard-disk for viruses/spyware

Best of all know your computer. When you are connecting on a wireless network

    - You see your hard-drive flashing solid green and you are not doing anything. Your computer/laptop may be infected.

Have two separate logins on your computer. One with admin rights and another with regular rights. Always use the login with the regular rights. If someone hacks in during your session. The hacker is limited to the account with regular rights and can't do much.

Always have a backup of your computer/laptop for restore purposes.

Is it safeto turn off microsoft anti-virus ??

I cannot download the software for a logitech fusion web cam.Turning off all other protection dos,nt help. Can I close the firewall ????

Is it safeto turn off microsoft anti-virus ??internet security

It depends..... Your antivirus would not prevent you from downloading a file... I doubt your firewall would have anything to do with it either. It's probably the security settings in your internet explorer. If you click Tools%26gt;internet options%26gt; Click the security Tab%26gt; Custom Level%26gt; Scroll Down to File Download and make sure it is checked as enable. If it is an update for your current webcam software... Then it may be your firewall. You can turn it off, do the update, then turn it back on

Is it safeto turn off microsoft anti-virus ??network security

maybe you should be asking is it safe to run it in the first place lol. but seriously have you tried zonealarms firewall and avg anitivirus? they both pretty good and free :)
Download Windows LiveOneCare it's free for 90 days and it takes care of everything. It will uninstall any other protection you have, or instruct you to do so. It's safe after all it's Microsoft. it will inform you as you go. I am using it for some time now and it is very good. You can uninstall it at any time with no problems and re install whatever you have at the moment.

    all the best
turn it off, just not for too long
If you have another anti-virus program in place then yes it is, u my have to go on to ur anti-virus and allow it to run
If you have another firewall in place yes - otherwise I would just set the site as an exception.
no its not safe to turn anti-virus off because the one you get automaticlly get with the computer doesnt work

i decided to download it because i kept getting viruses

now, every time my computer gets a virus, Anti-virus finds it and asks you if you want to delete it

Any one having problems with norton anti-virus from yahoo?network

Try doing a search on yahoo toolbar. when it loads on the top right its in read it either says on or off.

For some reason mines does by itself, but try clicking on it see if anything happens.
You shouldnt use Nortan anyway. Their products consume much of the system memory :/ and slow it down =[

AVG Free Edtion is better for protection =]
Redflyin is spot on, I used norton and found it to be a pain in the ***, I use AVG now which is free like Redflyin said and I have had NOT ONE problem ever.

Why pay money for something that doesn't work properly when you can get something free that does?
i will tell you what i would do.....completely uninstall it and get rid of it.......norton anti virus is useless i deleted mine about 3 weeks ago and my computer has run like a dream since it is no longer slow and i now never get any error messages....and what did i replace it with ..avg a free anti virus program hundred times better than norton and completley free

Is it worth paying for McAfee anti-virus software?

My subscription to McAfee has finished, and I am not sure whether to renew or to go for a free one like Avast or AVG?

Can anyone advise what is best - it's for a home laptop that I don't use very often but mostly for internet (so don't mind if McAfee slows it down a little)....but couldn't afford to get it fixed if a huge bug crashed the whole system down....

Is it really better to pay for McAfee or are the free ones just as good? Also, what is spyware etc., do I need to download a few different types of protection?

    Thanks! :)

Is it worth paying for McAfee anti-virus software?kawasaki

Personally, I use the free ones. But if you've got cash, go ahead and buy. There's even a AVG pro that you can buy. Usually, these paid anti-virus programs have firewall and anti-spyware included. But you can use separate programs like Spyware Terminator and Zone Alarm Pro.

Is it worth paying for McAfee anti-virus software?nortan antivirus

I use AVG not only at home, on my laptop but also at my business. I've had no problems with it, its easy to use, does a great job and isn't a pain like Mcafee. Actually our tech/computer guy at work recommended avg and I've never regretted it.
McAfee is software that has let me down, I still prefer Norton Anti virus.

Is anyone having problems with Norton Anti-virus stepping on Windows XP SP2?

I can't seem to get my System Restore feature to work on Windows XP SP2. I do all the Windows updates regularly, It's been this way for quite a few months. Other than just de-installing Norton, I don't know what else to do, I misplaced my installation CD for Norton, but I still have my account code.

I've tried everything that Tech Support has mentioned, but nothing seems to work for me. I have a High Speed DSL AT%26T Yahoo account that comes with protection, that should be enough in itself, shouldn't it?

i have no idea what the problem is. mine works fine on my XP SP2. maybe you don't have enough space deticated to use the restore function but i would guess something that simple has already been checked by the tech support.

I like AVG and it's free.
Then you would want something that will give you full protection, my sister in law got a copy of McAfee and that was hard to set up and not so easy to use, I think that symantec 360 would be good or a Trend Micro product they have some good features which will help protect you while you are shopping online
Although perhaps not the ''best'' anti-virus, there is a free opensource antivirus known as Clamwin.

    http://www.clamwin.com/

It is rather slow and can take a few hours on a large drive. It doesn't do scans on downloads which is a nice feature to have, but you won't get it from clamwin.

Additionally, you can throw in something like spybot, and adaware into the mix and you should be ok.

For home use, it should be enough.
most virus are spread through IE.

Here's some ideas to ''roll ya own'' Internet Security Suite for free. Free is always the best.

    1. For your Anti-Virus......(Always use only 1 A-V)

I like the AOL ActiveVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. ActiveVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.

In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, ActiveVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

    Full test results are here:

    http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/defa...

ActiveVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.

    Detects and removes spyware, too!

Updates many times per day to detect new malware.

Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

    http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivir...

    2. For your Firewall..........(Always use only 1 firewall)

An excellent free firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall ''leak tests'' that even most of the ''paid-for'' firewalls cannot pass.

I think what you are seeing in the scan is some of the files left over from the uninstall - files not essential in the running of the program. Sometimes the folder will be left with just the name of the program and no contents.

Why wont LIMEWIRE work since I installed norton anti virus?

It was working could it be the phising protection, I dont know what that is but I think since I enaballed that, thats when it started affecting limewire. If it is that how do I turn it off?

    Thanks in advance.

Why wont LIMEWIRE work since I installed norton anti virus?network security

It's just NAV you have? Not Norton Internet Security?

NIS has a firewall and you need to aloe Limewire to connect.

    Try to look at http://www.limewire.com/support/ , http://www.limewire.org/wiki/index.php?t... and http://portforward.com/

Edit: Or you can try to uninstall Limewire and install it again.

Edit2: You have NIS. Full version.

Then you need to allow Limewire to connect to the net in NIS.

Turning NIS off is NOT recommended to do.

    Solution

    Third-Party Security Programs

Many third-party security programs block LimeWire from connecting either by restricting access to the port that LimeWire uses to connect to the Gnutella network (i.e. - a firewall), the program itself, or a combination of the two. These programs may have been pre-installed on your computer when you first purchased it. Check the Windows system tray (usually located in the bottom-right corner of the screen, next to the time), and locate the icon that is associated with the security program that you are using. Right-click the icon to enter the settings.

YES ! There are many freeware programs that are better than the paid versions . Avast ,is one of the best ( probably the best) it has real-time protection for everything , email etc and it catches stuff Norton and McAfee routinely miss . I've been running it for 6 months now and I love it .. It's picked up more email virus than you can believe .You do need to register it every 14 months .no biggie and you get it for as many machines as you like... FREE ... try it you'll like it . Also, PLEASE ,make Firefox your default browser, if you haven't already .. read up on it and you' see why it's moving up on IE every month.. it's freakin' great !

Can I install both kaspersky internet security and kaspersky anti-virus at the same time in one computer?noton

ok as long as u only got 1 anti virus, u r ok wiv more than 1 anti spy
KAV and KIS use the exact same virus definition signatures. There is nothing to be gained by using both. I would un-install KAV.

In general, The use of 2 anti-virus programs at the same time can cause major conflicts. The 2 scanning engines will fight each other to scan every file that you read, write or execute which can cause a slowdown. For the same reason, using 2 A-Vs can cause you to have less protection from the various malware, not more.

(Using an anti-spyware with an anti-virus is good, however and is recommended)

When you get Trojan's and Spyware it is difficult to remove it completely. When you go through this situation your best bet would to perform a System Restore (restoring your computer to an earlier time) and backing up your data then performing a Reformatting procedure. The system restore will inactivate the virus' but you will still have all the threats on the computer, the reformat will wipe everything and you can start new.

    Hello,

You are more likely to be infected with viruses if you remove the said protections. You can however reduce the risk by making sure you have all of the latest Microsoft security updates installed. If you have a broadband connection and your computer is connected through a home router you also have the protection of the firewall that is part of the router. So, it is not advisable to remove your security programs. If you are unhappy with the software currently installed you could try some other solutions. Here are a couple decent security applications you could try.

no. just dont open any attatchments from people you dont know, and go to clean websites only like yahoo
Yes, you'll be safe only for a while. So much tries to come through when we're on the internet that we don't realize because our security blocks it. You'll be safe on protected websites like bank sites, but if you're on myspace and things like that your computer may very well explode. That is not a good idea.

    Viruses question?

If i u have an anti virus protection do u have to worry about vireses and i have Kaspersky do i have to worry about getting vireses cuz when i got my laptop it came with McAfee and it was really fast but now it's a little bit slower and i know Kaspersky is better

    Viruses question?norton

    Well there's a yes and a no.

Yes you should be worried. Because many antivirus programs may not pick up virus infected items that are new or that are hidden somehow. This is when you should be worrying, however since you said you have Kaspersky, the product should not be a problem.

No you don't have to worry because most antiviruses will protect you, so as I stated earlier, since you have Kaspersky, it shouldn't be a problem.

I am not sure about McAFee however, I read reviews on it and used it myself. I didn't find it as good as kaspersky. Kaspersky would be the choice I would go with since it's faster too.

Has anyone heard of computer viruses now being downloaded to cell phones via text messages?

I heard when you receive a text message you can now receive viruses on your cell phone, and now we will need anti-virus protection for our cell phones as well. Fact or Fiction?

Has anyone heard of computer viruses now being downloaded to cell phones via text messages?noton

There are several different issues here - some true, some false.

First of all, viruses cannot spread via *text* messages (i.e., SMS) - so, if this is indeed what you have heard, it's fiction.

However, viruses *can* spread via multimedia (MMS) messages. In fact, several such viruses already exist - the CommWarrior family being the most widespread one but there are also others (e.g., Mabir).

As a consequence of the above, you *do* need anti-virus protection for some cell phones.

It is important to note, however, that not all cell phones are vulnerable to viruses. Basically, only the phones using the Symbian S60 v8.x operating system are seriously threatened. (Although proof-of-concept viruses also exist for phones running the PalmOS, Windows Mobile and Symbian UIQ operating systems, they have no chances of surviving in the wild.)

fiction, not true, i dont believe u can get a virus on your phone through a pc..
The people posting that a virus by cell phone is fiction or cannot happen are idiots. Viruses DO exist for cell phones. The likelyhood of becoming infected is rather low but CAN happen!!!! The first virus was called CABIR.A and started in the Philippines. (Read here: http://www.wirelessguide.org/cell-phone-...
